Marking & feedback

A score is not the same thing as useful feedback

How Quesly connects suggested marks, teacher review and result release—so a student’s number has a decision behind it.

A score is not the same thing as useful feedback

MORE ROOM FOR TEACHING

The problem: a number hides the reasoning

A student sees a low mark and asks what was missing. To answer well, a teacher needs to connect the score to the response: which idea was understood, which explanation was incomplete and what the student should try next. A bare number cannot do that work.

AI makes this distinction more important. A fluent explanation can make a suggestion seem more reliable than it is, even when the criterion or interpretation needs correcting.

How Quesly helps: keep the explanation next to the work

Jev suggests written-answer marks with marking-point explanations. Teachers can compare those suggestions with the actual response, decide the final marks and save them before releasing results. This separates a draft judgment from the feedback the teacher chooses to share.

When explanatory textbook notes are available, teachers can optionally ask Jev to use them as additional reference material. Question-only material is not forced into that role. A relevant passage adds context; it is not proof that a question or score is correct.

Look for the next learning step

Consider an illustrative answer that names a science term but does not explain the relationship the question asks about. A useful review distinguishes recognition of the term from a demonstrated explanation. The feedback can then ask the student to explain that missing relationship.

The same check should protect valid alternative wording. A student should not need to reproduce a model answer word for word. If the reference does not cover the response, that is a reason for teacher review, not an automatic reason to reject the answer.

Release what you have actually reviewed

Complete and save the marks before sharing results. Revisit any uncertain suggestions, unclear criteria or answers that appear to use another valid method. Teachers remain responsible for the final decision.

Quesly brings those stages together, but does not establish that every generated reason is correct. The practical aim is a review you can explain to the student, with a next step that goes beyond the score itself.
